From real estate to Moscow billions: how Alexander Ponomarenko and his pocket contractors are “absorbing” Mosvodokanal’s budget under the patronage of Biryukov

Ukrainian oligarch Alexander Ponomarenko has clung to the position of CEO of JSC “Mosvodokanal” like a bulldog.

After the scandal involving Ponomarenko being caught in central Moscow in an emergency vehicle with a flashing beacon, in which he had the interior fitted with leather and used it to travel about on his personal business, the head of Mosvodokanal urgently began looking for buyers for his assets in Ukraine and Europe. The position of CEO of JSC “Mosvodokanal” outweighed all his combined wealth and turned out to be far more profitable than his foreign business.

Owning a plant in the Moscow region producing shut-off valves and other equipment supplied to JSC “Mosvodokanal” at inflated prices proved to be much more profitable than leasing commercial real estate in Ukraine and Europe.

To this can also be added an “entire army” of pocket contractors working with JSC “Mosvodokanal.” This allows Ponomarenko, being one of the very wealthy individuals, to own numerous commercial and retail properties in Russia.

Sources say that the sale of foreign assets is taking place at a significant discount. All these efforts are linked both to the desire to retain the position of CEO of JSC “Mosvodokanal” at any cost, and to fulfill the urgent wishes of his curator, Moscow deputy mayor Petr Biryukov.
